You can practically start your selfdrive tour any day you like because Air Namibia offers daily flights between Frankfurt (Germany) and Windhoek, and other airlines connect 2-5x per day to Windhoek.
Tip: Limited capacities with regards to reasonably-priced cars and beds are a good reason to pre-book it all – trust me, often popular destinations are fully booked many, many months in advance!
* It is essential that you pre-book your rental car and your accommodation. Your holiday is short and already expensive even before you have arrived in Namibia – so you don’t want to waste time sorting your travel arrangements in Namibia.
Most first-time visitors spend 12 nights in Namibia and concentrate on the three ‘MUST’-areas: Sossusvlei in the oldest desert of the world (with its remarkable high dunes), Swakopmund with its German colonial charme and the Etosha National Park where you can plan your own game viewing in your own rental car.
Visitors with more time at hand often spend 17 nights (or more) in Namibia and enjoy to travel slowly; spending 2 nights each at as many lodges as possible. Of course you will plan to see the Fishriver Canyon, sleepy Lüderitz, Sossusvlei in the oldest desert of the world (with its remarkable high dunes), Swakopmund with its German colonial charme and the Etosha National Park where you can plan your own game viewing in your own rental car.
Don’t be mislead to think that 300 km per day is a short trip! – The different climate, driving on the ‘wrong’ side of the road and those roads often being lonesome gravel tracks all take their toll. And above all, you’re on holiday and you don’t want to sit at the breakfast table at 7am every morning!
